ADOPT A HYENA!
 |
Baka - Baka was born sometime in 2010 and came to
Zooville on February 15, 2011. Baka, and his mate
Cheka, are among the very few animals the zoo has actually
purchased to bring here. The director had always loved
hyenas, but when she heard about these 2, had to raise the
money to bring them here - and she did! The volunteers
rallied with the director, and raised the funds and the help
to get the enclosure built in record breaking time - less
than one week! The hyenas were born at a zoo, and as
cubs were to be transfered to a zoo in another country.
We are told, they are non-related and DNA sexed. They
were approximately 10 months old when they arrived here. |

Cheka - along with her mate Baka would never see the zoo they
were intended for, because the export permits would not be
granted. They had sat in a holding cage at a broker's
facility waiting for permits that would not materialize.
They were fed extremely well and kept in beautiful condition,
only they were off exhibit in a secluded holding cage waiting to
be transported. When the broker realized the permit was
not going to come through, he wanted them in a proper enclosure
asap. That is when he contacted us and we jumped into
action. He informed the zoo he was not willing to hold
them any longer for the welfare of the animals, and that they
needed to go. We, however, had to repay the zoo for the
cost of the animals. It took several months, and they were
very patient with us, and in the end we succeeded. The
hyenas are enjoying their space and adjusting to seeing people.

Jake - Jake is our little resident
celebrity. Jake came to the attention of the world on the
Animal Planet show "Fatal Attractions." He was a cub who
was raised in an apartment on the 8th floor of a South Beach
apartment complex. He only had the companionship of his
human Bryan, and they formed a very strong bond. However,
it just wasn't enough. By the time Jake was a year old,
Bryan knew he had to make other arrangements for Jake. He
arranged for him to go to a beautiful facility in Miami, that
was willing to temporarily hold Jake until Bryan could either
raise the money to build him an appropriate exhibit on the
property, or move him to a more suited location. The cost
of caging has skyrocketed, and Bryan knew he could not manage
the thousands of dollars it was going to take. The center
holding Jake knew we had 2 hyenas about Jake's age and contacted
us about him. Then, Bryan contacted us about taking him. A
few days later, our hyena crew headed south and brought the
little star to his new home. Bryan came behind us to help
Jake settle in. It took about 5 minutes and Jake owned the
place! We look forward to the next phase of introducing
all of the hyenas together so they can live as a proper hyena
clan! |
HYENA ENRICHMENT
Hyenas love to destroy things, mark things and eat things!
Everything that they are given has to be non-toxic - absolutely
safe to be eaten. They love kong toys, but the biggest
ones last less than 5 minutes, but it is a great 5 minutes for
them! We are still testing new toys and enrichment ideas
for them all the time. Your continued support helps us try
new things!
Keeping our animals mentally fit is very
important to us. Your support helps us keep these guys not
just physically fit, but mentally fit as well! Whether we
are using different substrates to give different tactile
experiences, or scents for stimulating the olfactory senses, or
things they can tear into like bones, boxes and various toys, we
love to watch the animals respond, react, and rejoice! Your
contributions help us keep their lives enriched!
