ADOPT A PARROT!
 |
Amos - hatched on September 1, 1995, Amos came
to Zooville with Elmo on December 25, 1999. Her
owner had developed health problems, and was also
working and trying to care for her sick elderly father,
and was no longer able to care for these 2 awesome
birds. She loved them with all of her heart and
was devastated at having to place them. When she finally
decided to place them with us, she drove them all the
way from Indiana to Florida over her Christmas vacation.
She still checks in on these 2 and is happy to know they
are still happy, healthy and loved and cared for.

Elmo
- hatched on February 25, 2006, Elmo came to Zooville on
December 25, 1999 with Amos. Elmo is a big bully
and as he got older, Amos became less and less happy
living with him. Elmo took a fancy to Oddball and
Amos became enamored with Morgan. We separated
Elmo and Amos and let them meet the others and they let
us know without a doubt who they wanted to share their
lives with. Today, Elmo and Oddball are
quite happy together, and so is Amos and Morgan.
Elmo is a highly intelligent bird, and when he was
younger, we taught him a variety of behaviors like
stealing money, doing the hokey pokey, and taking a bow.
He will always be a ham and loves attention! |

Oddball - Oddball was hatched on February 14, 2001
and came to Zooville on July 14, 2001. He ended up
in Zooville almost by accident. We had just
relocated to a new location at the time, and moved into
a neighborhood that had a parrot breeder in it.
The mailman had delivered some mail and saw some of the
animals, and told us about the parrot woman and a sickly
little baby she had that the owner was very worried
about. When he went to her the next day he told
her about us and gave her our information. She
came up and met with us and asked us if we would be
willing to try and save this little baby bird. He
had stunting syndrome. He had a normal size head
with feathers, but a stunted dwarf bald body. We
took him in and treated him for everything. But
what saved the little Oddball, was a blood transfusion
from Amos! Within 24 hours, he started sprouting
feathers, and began visibly growing. Within a
month, he looked like a normal macaw and today, he is
absolutely beautiful and picture perfect! |
 |
Morgan - Morgan was hatched in 2005 and was bought
by one of our associates at an auction. Morgan was splay
legged and has difficulty perching, and they were afraid
he would end up in a bad situation. He (or she)
has always lived at Zooville, and when his owner moved
out of the state, he was permanently placed with us.
By that time, Amos had already shown interest in him,
but we were hesitant to put them together and have them
bond if there was a chance they could be separated.
Parrots choose one mate for life and if they chose each
other, we were not going to separate them.
Morgan's owner realized that the 2 birds really wanted
to be together, and that they would be happier together
than alone with us humans. So, with the welfare of
the birds in mind, we placed them together and they have
never been happier.

Cagney
- Cagney arrived in Zooville on August 27, 2011, and was
approximately 13 years old. Cagney was one of 9
birds to be placed with a family member after the owner
got very ill and unable to care for the birds. We
were contacted by the family owners, because Cagney is
not only loud, but had no love for anyone other than his
owner and was willing to bite anyone else, especially
anyone that could be easily intimidated. Cagney is
happy to be in a large enclosure where he can spread his
wings and fly if he wants. He has not tried to
bite anyone here, but he also knows we are not afraid of
him. He has a great little wave he does on
command that we discovered by accident, which makes us
wonder what other things this very smart bird is hiding! |

Chester - Chester was hatched in 1986 and came to
Zooville on November 1, 2001. He had quite the
extraordinary life as his first parents were a private
pilot and stewardess. Chester got to "fly" around
the world, only he did all his flying in the cockpit of
an airplane. He was a happy well adjusted bird
with a huge vocabulary, which included not just words
and phrases, but songs as well. Unfortunately for
Chester, his parents ended up getting divorced and they
had tried to share custody of Chester. While that
might seem like the ideal solution, Chester sensed all
the changes and developed some serious behavior
problems. Besides aggression and biting, he
developed Amazon Foot Necrosis Syndrome and began self
mutilating his feet. They tried behavior therapy
but when nothing worked and they were at their wits
ends, they placed Chester with us. We tried many
things, all of which failed to solve the problem.
Then, by accident, we let Chester and Tropicana into a
new cage together and Chester focused all of his
attention on Trop and never chewed himself again.
Love - it has amazing healing powers!

Tropicana - Tropicana was an imported wild caught
male who had been a breeding male in back room of a pet
store. The female he was with was in horrible condition,
and one of their employees who was a friend and
volunteer of the zoo, begged them to turn the pair over
to us. They did on March 1, 2002 and we began
treatment on the female immediately. Once we got
her stable, she needed surgery to repair the damage to
her head, as she had scratched all the skin off the top
of her scalp. Unfortunately, she passed away under
anesthesia and Tropicana was devastated at being alone.
That is when we thought we would try to put Tropicana
and Chester together, even though they were both males.
I guess that didn't matter as much as they were both
lonely and wanting companionship. They have been
happily cohabitating for 9 years!
